PRIMARY 2 LEARNING JOURNEY – BUKIT PANJANG NEIGHBOURHOOD
Letter issued to P2 Parents on 2 March 2009
Dear Primary 2 Parents/Guardians
PRIMARY 2 LEARNING JOURNEY – BUKIT PANJANG NEIGHBOURHOOD
As part of the Primary 2 curriculum, your child will be going on several Learning Journeys this year. This term, we are going on a Learning Journey around Bukit Panjang Neighbourhood.
The main objective of this Learning Journey around Bukit Panjang Neighbourhood is to reinforce concepts taught in school, thereby enhancing the learning process. Pupils will be actively engaged in new learning environments and apply life skills learnt in school to real life situations. It will also give your child the experience to be independent in taking the LRT, as well as purchasing their own food at the foodcourt. A pre-LJ briefing for the pupils has been conducted in the school hall today where safety guidelines and the activities for the LJ are touched on.
The first part of this Learning Journey involves a neighbourhood walk, which incorporates a Maths Trail, to Fajar Shopping Centre and Wet Market. Next, we will take the LRT (from Fajar LRT Station) to Bukit Panjang LRT Station. Along the way, we will identify some buildings and facilities found in the neighbourhood which will tie in with the Social Studies curriculum.
From the LRT Station, we will then proceed to Bukit Panjang Plaza. We will have our recess break at the Kopitiam Foodcourt in Bukit Panjang Plaza where English and Mathematics learning activities will be incorporated. We encourage your child to purchase food independently at the foodcourt. If you do not wish your child to do so, please pack a light snack for him/her. After the break, we will go to the Community Library in Bukit Panjang Plaza where your child will learn to select books that are suitable for his/her age group. This will tie-in with the school’s Reading Programme will be launched soon. Finally, we will make our way back to school by school bus for debriefing and dismissal at 6.30pm.
Please take note of the things that your child must bring for this Learning Journey and to pack them in a small bag:
· EZ-link card
· National Library Board (NLB) card or Student ID card
· Umbrella or a raincoat
· Money to purchase food at the foodcourt or Kopitiam card (about $5.00)
· Light snack if your child is not purchasing food
· Pencil Case

Year Head, Primary 2
Pupils are to report to school as per normal but lessons will be suspended. Thus there will not be any Mother Tongue lesson on that day. 2 Courage Neighbourhood LJ Reflection2 Courage Neighbourhood LJ Reflection
I enjoyed my trip to the Fajar Wet Market and Bukit Panjang Plaza. The place I like most was the library in Bukit Panjang Plaza because I loved to read story books. Next, it was the ‘Kopitiam’ Food Court. The food court sold a variety of food. I had bread and a cup of Milo. It was simply delicious! Lastly, I did not enjoy the trip to the wet market. It was quite smelly and dirty. It was hot too as the place was not air-conditioned. Overall, I enjoyed the trip and I had learnt a lot of things.
Joyce Mah Min Hui, P2-Courage
I enjoyed the fieldtrip. I learnt some library rules. I must not run, shout or talk loudly in the library. I also enjoyed going to the food court to have my tea break. We learnt how to buy food and also to queue up in an orderly manner. I hope that Miss Ong will bring us to the zoo or Science Centre the next time.
Jason Wong, P2-Courage 2 Peace Neighbourhood LJ Reflection2 Peace Neighbourhood LJ Reflection
I felt very happy because I could travel around the neighbourhood with my classmates. I was excited too as it was my first time exploring the Bukit Panjang Neighbourhood. I went to the Fajar Wet Market and took the LRT from Fajar to Bukit Panjang. We went to borrow books at the Bukit Panjang library. The librarian gave us a talk on how to select the appropriate books for our age group before we proceeded to borrow the books. I felt tired but happy. I hope to go there again.
Loh Ying Xuan, P2-Peace
I felt very happy because I could learn more about our neighbourhood. There are a lot of facilities in our neighbourhood. Every place we went means a lot so we must value them. Being quiet and behaving well during the trip helps us to understand the lesson well.
Dylan, 2-Peace 3月11日 Greetings for 2009Greetings! We would like to take this opportunity to welcome your child to Primary 2 and hope that he/she has a wonderful learning journey ahead! We believe that every child has the capability to excel with proper guidance and care. 11月7日 Our Performance (02 November 2007)The P2 pupils performed for the parents on 2nd November 2007.
Reflections from 2 Loyalty pupils Rachel, “I learnt to speak good English and to perform the best performance ever in front of 500 people. Speech and Drama course is useful for me because it is good to learn to speak good English and pronounce words properly and to act.” Damon, “I learnt to act and sing through Speech and Drama lessons. At first, I was nervous when I was performing. But when I have the chance to try more, I was not nervous after all.” 9月28日 Children's Day Celebration @ GRPSThere was a concert for the pupils after the pledge taking ceremony and several of the P2 teachers put up a performance. Here's what they said...
Teacher A
La, la, la, la, laa... (horrible singing)
Hi everybody!
I'm a teacher you know well but long ago before I was a teacher I wanted to be a ballet dancer. Sigh! But I kept flling and so I had to switch career. Can you guess who I am?
Teacher B
Hi everybody! I do not want to be a ballet dancer like the previous teacher. If you keep really quiet, you will hear my talents. Are you ready? (Opera singing followed by glass shattering sound)
As you can see I wasn't very successful. That's when I wrote in to be a teacher. Who am I?
Teacher C
I can't sing but I can be anything I want to be when I'm on stage.
"Ohhhh! I've been shot! Ahhhh!"
Let's try it again.
Cut! Cut Cut! Horrible acting! That did not look dramatic enough. Again.
Scene 101. Take 207.
Sigh! After the 250th take I lost my voice and my career. I then decided to take on my second choice career. That's when I became a teacher.
Teacher D
I love cooking exotic dishes for my friends and I was really good at baking. Everyone loved my superhard bubblegum cookies with fried grasshopper as toppings. But one day... as I was baking... (Explosion)
That's when I decided baking was just not for me.
So I walked to GRPS and became a teacher.
Teacher E
I love running and anything to do with sports. I try to dribble the basketball but it always runs away and when I jump, I usually have to visit the doctor after that. As you can see, being a professional basketball player was the 'perfect' job for me except for one tiny little problem... I was just too short. So, I became a teacher which is a job with no height requirements.

I was very excited because I love to make things. I used tomato sauce, cheese, tuna, lettuce, bread and margarine. When I was done with my sandwich, I did not eat it because I wanted to give it to my father for his birthday. When he ate it, he said it was delicious. I was glad he liked it. Ng Huiyan 2 Kindness
I was very excited about making a sandwich by myself. I spread the tuna and lettuce and I was done. I made it for my Mum and I felt happy about it. Jamie Chua 2 Kindness
When I started making the sandwich, I felt so hungry and excited. I put the lettuce and cheese on my bread. I did not spread the margarine because I do not like it. My sandwich was delicious. Chow Boon Hui 2 Kindness
9月11日 My First Day Being A Pledge-taker
My First Day Being A Pledge-taker On 14 August 2007, was my first day being a pledge taker. I was surprised when Mdm Zuleha called me. I thought that she wanted to scold me but to my surprise she wanted me to try the pledge taking. So I started practicing. At last I finished memorizing the lyrics of the national and school pledge. Afterwards, I went up the stage. There is a girl named Giowanne who accompanied me when I went up the stage. First, I was nervous but suddenly, I realized that it was easy memorizing the words. From that day onwards, I am proud to become a pledge taker. I wish that I can be a pledge taker when I am in secondary school. Written by Nur Sarah, Primary 2 Grace
9月10日 Speech and Drama by Acropolis English Centre Pte LtdThis is an English enrichment programme that is introduced in Term 3. The students are taught the essential skills towards improving their speech and in performing drama. It is indeed an activity that the students enjoyed and looked forward to every week.
One of the lessons was on learning to express themselves with words and without words (mime).
The students were asked to change words in the script to express different types of feelings and content and this essentially taps on their creativity and self-expression skills. Sandwich Making Competition (2 Honesty)It was a truly an enjoyable time for all students of 2 Honesty. The students had the hand-on experience in making their own sandwiches from basic ingredients like bread, tuna, margarine, mayonnaise, lettuce, cucumber and egg. Some of the best sandwiches were chosen for competition among the groups and the best sandwich was selected. The students were also responsible for the cleaning up which they did very well. Finally, the students ate their own sandwiches which they unanimously agree were extremely delicious!

8月22日 Taiwan Student Exchange Programme![]() ![]() ![]() For the 4-day period from 31/7/07 to 3/8/07, students from Chung Yuan Elementary School of Taiwan had immersed in the daily classroom activities of Greenridge Primary School. One of the female students, Avita, joined the 2 Honesty class. Chew Jia Ying of 2 Honesty was selected to be her buddy, helping her to get around the school throughout the whole programme.
One of the activities that Avita had participated in was the creation of her own Kolam, as part of the Social Studies lesson. Kolam is a decorative design drawn in front of the homes of those who celebrated Deepavali. It is a sort of painted prayer that is usually symmetric and comprises of lines, curved loops and dots. Kolams are thought to bestow prosperity to the homes and is also a sign of invitation to welcome all to the homes.
To show our appreciation for our dear friend from Taiwan, the class had expressed their feelings on colourful cards in Chinese and English. The cards are compiled and given to Avita as a memorable souvenir from our class. Some non-Chinese students even attempted to write in Chinese in order to express their deepest thanks. Avita had also expressed her thanks in a card dedicated to the class. It was indeed a fun and heartfelt moment for all! Colour PoemsThe P2 pupils wrote these wonderful colour poems for their English Unit 10: The World Of Colours.
Yellow is roses, daisies and pansies.
Yellow is bananas, corns and peppers.
Yellow is bumble bees, chicks and one dollar coins.
A yellow butterfly dancing in the breeze,
The delicious honey in the hive,
Flames crackling in the chimney,
Yummy corn from the cob.
Spiky thorns of yellow roses in my garden,
Warm sunshine shining on me.
Yellow is the colour for me!

Learning Journey to Hydroculture-Scape Pte Ltd on 15 August 2007
The afternoon session teachers went on a learning journey to Hydroculture-Scape Pte Ltd on 15 August 2007.
They learnt that hydroculture is the method of growing plants in an inert medium with water and odourless fertillizer rather than soil. It is easy, clean and one has greater success in raising healthy plants. We can tell at a glance when the plant needs to be watered. It's simple! No more over or under watering therefore fewer plant losses.
The teachers planted their own plants in beakers using hydroculture and you can see them in the photos above.
